Latest Storm Not Quite As Good As The Dreamcasts Suggested

The latest little series of storms left 7-10 inches of snow at local resorts. Kirkwood is claiming 12-18 inches, but they have a reputation for seriously over-reporting. It also is leaving behind some very cold temperatures to allow for all day snowmaking efforts to begin. As of 1pm this afternoon, the new webcam at Alpine Meadows showed a temperature of 27°, and snow guns were blazing away on Kangaroo.

It wasn’t quite enough snow to make everyone happy though. Two resorts threw in the towel on plans to open on Friday, November 22nd. Both Mount Rose and Northstar quietly changed their websites to reflect an opening date “when we can offer the quality our customers expect”.

As of now, the weekend forecast brings a lot of wind and continued cold temperatures. The next possible little storm is set to pass to our south around Thanksgiving day. We may see similar amounts of snow from that storm. The next significant storm does not appear until the outermost reaches of the current models, near the end of the first week of December. Paul at TahoeWeatherBlog.com has been getting a lot of attention this week by continuing to call for a very stormy December ahead.

Back in 1976-77, Alpine Meadows did not open until January 1st. Things could definitely be much worse…there’s plenty of hope in the forecasts. Boreal and Mammoth continue to offer limited skiing and Heavenly is still calling for opening this weekend. Go skiing and riding where you can…and maintain patience. 🙂

  1. Yep “Back in 1976-77, Alpine Meadows did not open until January 1st.”

A couple years back AW refuted rumours they were closing in January.

The uncertainty with the seasons is a good reason to plan things to do for tourists and locals. A water park can be nice ( in Scandinavia the parks aren’t Disneyesque though), a 3D cinema is nice, arcade games are nice. Nice is just nice though. Have you seen the indoor ski hills on moving mats, the Woodward Tahoe jump into rubber cubes, a ski jump into water?

I can’t wait to see what Mr. Chevis comes up with.

PS: What will KSL do with High Camp?
