New Snow But Challenging Conditions

This is my last post of the Alpine Meadows 2024-2025 winter season. Tomorrow is the final day of the ski season for Alpine. It has not been the best winter season we have ever experienced, but it was still great. I am filled with good memories of those perfect days we all shared and so grateful to have had the opportunity to ski another season at my favorite resort.

I want to give a big “THANK YOU” to my fellow skiers and snowboarders who have shown their appreciation and support for our Unofficial Alpine ski reports.

Snowing in the morning

It was funky and tricky on the hill today. We received a few inches of very sticky snow overnight. Snow continued to fall at a slow pace through most of the day, although it did not add much to the initial depth that we found on the slopes at the opening bell. Low clouds hung over the upper mountain, making it very difficult to see variations in the snow surface. I skied more tentatively than I have skied all season in Alpine Bowl.

Trying to find Alpine Bowl

A few inches of snow covered a firm surface that had been groomed overnight. At least I think it had been groomed, but I would not swear to it. The light was just too flat to guarantee I was staring at corduroy when we took our only trip up Summit Chair. Lower down the mountain, the vision was a little better, but nowhere near perfect. Skiing areas that had not been groomed during the first few hours of operation required extreme concentration.

Dance Floor

New snow over icy bumps topped with frozen rubble, in flat light, presented a disaster waiting to happen. Luckily for my group, nobody met with disaster. Snow conditions got better as more skiers packed the various runs.

Of course, conditions such as those seen today can still be an enjoyable challenge. The unnamed trail we call Chicken Leg presented a challenge that made me smile after completing its firm, partially snow-filled, sun-cupped slope. I smiled because I wondered why I thought it would be worth skiing. It turned out to be a one-run tour of this slope.

Flat light conditions kept us on Roundhouse for a number of runs while we felt our way down Dance Floor, Red Ridge, Charity, and Yellow Trail. After a while we headed over to Sherwood. I skied through Sherwood Forest from the top of TLC and followed it with a tour of Power Line. Snow conditions in the Sherwood Forest were just a little softer than those on the front side, allowing me to enjoy slow turns through the trees. Power Line was filled with sun cups, but they were just turning soft when we arrived, allowing our turns to be on a softer surface. I did not venture onto Sherwood Face or beyond, figuring the conditions were most likely rough and firm. I did receive a report from Rhonda and Joe, who skied Sherwood before we arrived. They reported that the snow appeared to be deeper on the Sherwood side of the mountain. They evidently put down some fresh powder turns.

Fresh Tracks at Sherwood

There is always something to cheer about, even when conditions are not perfect. Food prices at the Chalet and the main lodge were severely reduced today. Fifty percent off was a number I heard kicked around. I believe efforts were being made to sell off as much as possible before closing day.

Unfortunately, the music planned for the deck this afternoon had to be moved into the bar. The Allman Bros played their hearts out while those in the bar cheered them on.

See you all tomorrow, and once again, thank you for all your support.

Enjoy your day.

Andy

  2. Thank you for your posts.
I read them frequently as I know many others do. I pass your site on to other locals and they appreciate your reports as well.

  3. Thank you Andy and Mark, I follow all the posts. I had to cut my season early after a run in with a frozen berm on President’s Monday. This was my 46th year skiing Tahoe. It seemed like a really good Spring without too much high temps or late season snow to create sticky conditions. Your efforts are much appreciated. Enjoy your Summer. Dana

  4. Thank you! Your dedication to the AM crowd is very much appreciated. Andy and Mark you make the ski season a lot more enjoyable for all of us.

  5. Thanks for the reports this season! I truly appreciate the time, dedication, and insight you both offer. Nightly Unofficial Alpine reports are as much a part of my skiing season as skiing itself.

I’m a longtime local but it took retirement to get me out on the slopes on a regular basis. It’s been fun learning more about the mountain from you and Mark. See ya out there next year, or maybe on the other side.

  6. Thanks- I really appreciate all of these posts throughout the year. I hope they all stay online, as they will remain a great archive of Alpine Meadows.

  7. Thank you Mark & Andy for all the great reporting, photos & weather updates!! You both motived me to get out & ski!! Also thank you to Jeff Goldstone & his amazing crew for making Alpine Meadows the BEST ski mountain in Tahoe! 🩷

  8. Mark and Andy, whatever will I read every late afternoon to get the latest on my favorite ski mountain? I don’t get up to ski as often as I would like, however, I ride along with you and your ski gang with your UA ski reports and photos. You are always so positive and consider every day a good day for skiers. So appreciate your optimism and I think that reflects your attitude about life in general. Very impressed with your perfect days skied record. Have a terrific spring and summer pursuing your other outdoor sports and activities.
Many thanks – so enjoy reading UA.

  9. Thank you both for your daily reports that remind us all of what’s important—getting out there and doing it again and again.

After more the 10 years of making excuses not to ski, I reengaged and skied 19 days this year! I did it with long time friends and family including my grandchildren, sharing Alpine and its magic for the first time with many of them.

My father, with whom I skied Alpine more than 200 times, would have been proud. Keep it up guys. You remind us and our extended families how special a place Alpine is.

How do I get one of those stickers?

  10. Thanks for all the true reporting about Apine. I look forward to reading reports from both of you and will miss the Unofficial Alpine reports throughout the next few months.

By the way, Weasel was fun this morning.

  11. Mark and Andy, I add my thanks to both of you for taking the time to write these reports from AM. I have been skiing at AM for many years, off and on. My wife and I raised and skied with our children and now grand children. We have been truly blessed! Hope to be skiing and reading your reports early next season! Thanks again!

  12. Thank you! I love your reports. Especially when I’m not out skiing. I never ski as many days as I hoped and I get my vicarious runs with you. I’ve skiied Alpine for 60 years, having fun thru college, with our kids and now with grandkids.

  13. Andy & Mark, thank you for your posts this year. I started reading them about halfway through the season, and as a result grew to like skiing Alpine more than the other side. I look forward to your reports next year!
