Cinnamon Rolls Anyone?

Before we even loaded onto Summit Chair this morning, there were moans and groans to be heard from those standing in line. Backs, necks, rear ends, knees, and quads, among other body parts, were in achy condition this morning, according to a number of my friends. We put our aches and pains into a pocket and headed up Summit Chair to enjoy the early morning spring snow.

Sunspot was not groomed overnight, creating a few more moans and groans from those on my chair. We like making early morning turns on soft corduroy as often as possible on a warm spring morning. Wolverine turned out to be this morning’s alternative to Sunspot. A creamy soft corduroy surface in Wolverine and Alpine Bowl fulfilled our early morning appetite. It was not long after riding Summit and Roundhouse, we scooted over to Sherwood, hoping for perfect conditions on the Sherwood Face and perhaps in Chute Zero. We were a little late for the main Sherwood run, as the perfectly groomed slope was already missing its corduroy coating.

Soft and a little sticky on Sherwood Face

Soft spring snow was still covering it, but previous skiers had already scarred the surface. I enjoyed turning very slowly between soft moguls on Sherwood Face, but others were not as enthused as I was. Deep, sticky snow was a term I heard from other people who stood in line at the base of Sherwood. We left Sherwood after a couple of round trips. On the way back to the front side, I dove into Expert Short Cut, mixing my skills with giant moguls that had a spring surface. Although I lost control a couple of times as I climbed the steep slopes of deep moguls, I still felt exhilarated after completing the short run.

Just to prove it was an unusual day for my group of friends, we stopped early at the Alpine Chalet, sitting down to eat either a giant pretzel or a mountainous cinnamon roll. After digesting an entire cinnamon roll, I was ready for a sled ride to the first aid room. However, instead of the sled ride, we headed back up the mountain.

The ridge of Sympathy was just a little too soft, but still enjoyable. Rolls and Knolls proved to be a little more firm and nice enough. West Palisades and Medium Yellow Gully presented themselves as the best slopes of the day. Their corn-covered moguls put big smiles on our faces. By the time we completed the tour of Palisades West and Medium Yellow Gully, Scott Chair opened.

Lower High Yellow Face and High Yellow Gully were excellent at mid-day.

West Palisades was perfect.

I cannot tell you how excited those who skied Bobby’s and Ridge Run were after making turns on perfectly smooth corn covering each trail. Patty reported back to me that Seldom Slides was heavenly after she skied it. Instead of following her down Seldom Slides, I made my mandatory visit to Gentian Gully. I was alone on the slope and content as usual, curving my way through the trees.

In My Favorite Forest

View of gathering clouds from the entrance to Ice Cliffs.

I turned off before dropping into the gully because Subway is closed and I skied Ice Cliffs and Promised Land. The snow was delightful.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. Aargh I should have been more patient after Sherwood. I just did not trust that anything else would be good. Andy is smart…remember that. However various errands completed in the afternoon…tomorrow is another day.

  2. I think PT was slow to update the AP.
When did Scott chair open ?

I saw Sherwood lift showed closed before 11. About as usual. Scott was not posted open till nearly 1:30 by which time I redirected and did 3 runs at the northern annex (2 Sibo 1 Headwall) then Squaw side went to hell. Shirley Granite,& Headwall closed . They say lightning was seen.
Sibo closed leaving Only one upper lift : Gold Coast with much skiing,

I then took my right boot off & drove to AM where every lift planned to be open remained open till 3:40 when lightning was seen. Great corn harvest at both sides. I agree Seldom Slides was superb.
D7& D8 had good corn at 3. Last run was Gentilian with a left into Promise Land to get back to lodge. No traffic to pass on on 20 on way up. Only passed 2 cars easily on way down.
