Winter or Spring?

It snowed, rained, and drizzled, and the sun came out. Spring arrived once again in the middle of winter. I thought today was a spectacular day. Winter snow conditions existed on the upper slopes, especially those that hide in the shade.

D7, D8, Peril Ridge, Low Beaver Bowl, Palisades, High Yellow, Our Father, and Counter Weight Gully, as well as Expert Shortcut and Art’s Knob offered skiers good winter snow. I almost forgot Gentian Gully, where the snow was also in winter condition. There were plenty of other trails with winter snow, including Gunner Knob and Sympathy Face.

Typical California spring conditions existed on slopes that receive lots of direct sun exposure. We skied the ridge between West Gully and CB Chute on the Sherwood side of the mountain. This area had not been skied much since the last storm. We enjoyed a smooth spring surface most of the way down. We also skied South Face. It was a little rougher but still offered nice spring snow.

South Face was a little rougher as it had been skied more than the other ridge we skied earlier

I enjoyed the winter snow in Low Beaver, followed by spring snow as I dropped out of Beaver Bowl and skied down to the unused groomed slope known as Kangaroo. Chute that Seldom Slides was interesting to ski, but the snow was not all that great. Tower 19, Sunspot, and Wolverine Bowl treated us to good spring snow as well.

Lines were not all that long at the bases of lifts. Sunshine filled the sky, and temperatures were more than pleasant. For the first time this year I was skiing with my son, who likes to wander the mountain and drop into places that make me think twice at times. Today, I just followed him, and we had a lot of fun.

I had no complaints today. Hopefully tomorrow will bring more good skiing.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. I was really surprised at how well Sherwood was skiing today. Robin Hood and all aspects of Sherwood Face were well consolidated and well into the corn cycle. Toward South Face there was less consolidation so more like mashed potatoes.

Tomorrow is looking ugly with freezing temperatures, high winds and not much sun or new snow.
