Storm Clouds Brewing

Today was the last beautiful, warm, sunny spring day, we will have for the next few days. A storm is on the way that has promised to drop new snow on top of the soft wet spring surface we have enjoyed this week. As of 4pm this afternoon, the sky has turned from blue to gray. Hopefully there will be enough snow to cover the off-piste areas so that we do not encounter the hard rough icy snow that will exist after our nice spring snow freezes during the night.

Here comes the storm

I enjoyed a number of runs off Summit in the hours between 9 and 11 this morning. They were all groomed and varied from firm on the more north facing slopes to softish on the south facing slopes. However, they were all very acceptable. At about 10:30 I joined friends at Sherwood, where spring was in full bloom. Groomed areas were soft and smooth and off-piste were soft with some slightly firm rubble from previous skiers turns or traverse lines that created a bumpy ride.

Sherwood Face was in nice spring condition. I enjoyed the left side the most, but the right side close to a rock band was also delightful as it had received less traffic and was very smooth. Chute Zero did not disappoint, but it was not as smooth as yesterday morning because it had been skied plenty on Tuesday. Powerline was also pleasant and relatively smooth as it is not as heavily used by non-locals.

Groomed Lakeview slopes softened before noon and pleased a number of people who toured Out Limits and Mountain View. Ridge and Bobby’s (right side) skied well as the sun created a surface close to corn. I did find Weasel still pretty firm just before noon.  I did notice that lift lines were almost non-existent today.  It appeared to be a relatiavely light Friday and not a Friday that looked like a Saturday.

The word on the street that we have heard is a closing date for Alpine is scheduled for April 28th. This will be a little disappointing if there is still enough snow to ski the Summit slopes and/or the High Traverse. We Alpine people do like our spring skiing.

Hopefully you will need your fat boys for the new deep powder that will be falling tomorrow and/or Sunday.

Enjoy your day,
Andy
