We’re pressing pause on skiing for the weekend. Today marked my 101st day in a row of skiing (91 at Alpine Meadows), so I gave myself permission to take a break on what is likely going to be a very busy weekend. Andy sent me a text yesterday letting me know that he would also be doing the same for the weekend. So there will not be a full report for today, nor will there be any report for tomorrow. I should be around on Sunday afternoon to put together a look at the upcoming weather for next week.
I did get out there this morning to take some laps before things got incredibly busy. It got incredibly busy early. On my second lap I looked back at the parking lot from Summit and Lot 4 was about out to Chalet Road already. When we left around 11:15, the Deer Park lot was just about full…on a non-powder day Friday. Highway 89 had a solid stream of cars heading in to the Tahoe area.
The groomed slopes were great early on until the cookies got churned up. The groomers were very busy, to the point where having your head on a swivel was not enough. Full body armor might be de rigueur for the weekend crowd, as it was nutty. North facing off piste terrain was still good this morning. That said, you still have to make your way back to a lift via some runout.
The storm for Monday is looking more lackluster with each model run. The latest GEFS run looks for 5-6 inches of snow.
The models are still calling for a stronger AR type system later in the week. As of today, it still looks strong, but the timing looks a bit slower, focusing more on next weekend. It’s currently showing 36+ inches of snow possible. Remember models runs more than 5 days out have been essentially worthless this season, hence taking another look Sunday.
That first photo is actually really nice, so here it is again without the “Pause” marking. Be safe out there!
Great job guys! Love the updates.
Impressive run! Enjoy the day off. Don’t forget to cancel your parking reservation!
Coming from the “Prairie State,” I really enjoy reading your blog! The photos, and actually, the entire “ski-experience” is amazing, and readily draws the interest of a flat-lander!
Mark – why did you leave the comment about the chemtrails off of my comment?
Past experience has been that if I approve even one comment, then there’s a deluge of comments to follow. This blog is about skiing, it is not a weather discussion forum.
Anybody know why TLC went on hold today?
I appreciate your truly useful, down to earth and reality-based views of one of my favorite Tahoe hills. Keep it comin’
I got to get a free park spot at this coolest ski mountain in tahoe on saturday and take the b2b to that gnarly other mountain and shred with some former serious world cup ski racers. So awesome and no lines on the mothership lift nor people on the horrendously bumped out west face or chute 75 during the stifel race, doesn’t get better than that on a busy ski skate – stifel race weekend. As them skiers shout out at the coolest mountain alpine meadows—-WHOO HOOO WHOO HOOO
👍
