We were taking a late afternoon walk on the golf course cart path in Squaw Valley when we noticed people on a man-made patch of snow adjacent to the First Venture Ski Lift. As we walked closer to the pile of snow that had been blown onto this beginner ski run, it became apparent that people were skiing on the slope. I am going to assume these people were making some of the first turns of the season. Of course, the lift was not operating so they were hiking up and skiing down.
When we arrived at the base of the lift we were greeted by a couple of young men doing flips off a small jump they had constructed. Soon after taking photos of the flippers we were informed that the three skiers we were watching were from the Palisades Big Mountain Ski Team.
I guess ski season has started even though I am still enjoying the sunny fall days we have been blessed with this past week.
Our nights and mornings have been cold. Early morning temperatures have been in the twenties allowing snow guns to operate. Of course most of us are hoping they will not really be needed because we are hoping real snow falls in heavy enough amounts to cover the slopes with an honest layer of snow.
I am hoping to get a few more hikes and mountain bike rides in before winter sets in for good, but my skis are ready to come into contact with snow anytime.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
