Sure Would!

The clouds were thick over Summit this afternoon. It went on lightning hold at some point.

Here we go, heading into the final weekend of “regular” season operations. Today was slightly more busy than yesterday, and as I headed back into Truckee, it’s looking like the start of a busy holiday weekend. People are wandering through downtown looking for that thing that makes them feel like a local. Patrons were lined up for dining at Jax and at 1882 for lunch. There’s also a lot of circling and looking for a parking place going on.

This is the final weekend for Sherwood, Scott and Meadow, in case you had not heard that yet. So it didn’t faze me all that much when Summit was on a delayed opening this morning due to unfinished cat work up top. After two perfunctory laps on Roundhouse to warmup and tune up my wax, we headed straight to TLC and Sherwood, hoping to maximize my laps there. I’ll catch up on my Summit laps in June.

Andy didn’t mention how quickly things are melting at Sherwood in his report yesterday. The amount of bare dirt and rock that has appeared since Sunday is truly amazing. There was almost no rocks or dirt showing on Sherwood face or South Face last weekend. Look at it now!

We’ve gone from carefree ski anywhere skiing to adventure season, where you might consider running your rock skis. I tagged my fair share today, fortunately with no serious damage. Even the main Sherwood groomer has been reduced to a half sized strip due to the appearance of the summer road crossing half way down..

Patty entering the last bit of the preferred entrance to Chute Zero. It got spicier as the day went on.

That said, I wasted no time on the groomed run today, instead heading straight to Chute Zero on the leftmost edge of South Face. Yesterday, we managed to eliminate most of the sun cups and get some slush bumps in place. With the cloud cover late yesterday, the sun cups did not regrow. I did a dozen laps in Chute Zero today, with the exception of one run, in what most likely should called Chute One (between Chute Zero and East Gully), accessed best from the South Face traverse above. Honestly, that skied even better than Chute Zero, just smooth as silk.

Eventually, Ollie put up the sign letting us know that Sherwood was closing, and advising us to head back to the other side. The return via High Yellow was excellent. It made me wish that we had ABC this weekend, as the Palisades to Medium Yellow lap on repeat would be really fun…maybe we can get that in June.

Scott…Ridge and Bobby’s were uninspiring, being somewhat tacky by the time Scott opened. Scott Chute is open only from the alternate entrance and even that is getting spicy. I probably need to experiment with Gentian and the Promised Land again tomorrow.

Just before noon, I did sneak in a lap on Summit. Both D7 and D8 were skiing great, but far busier than I like to be a part of, not to mention the mushy return to Summit. Evidently Summit went on lightning hold shortly after I left.

We’ve had some pretty good downpours at home this afternoon, and I am a bit concerned about the forecast tomorrow. There’s a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers, even in the morning tomorrow. The chances for thundershowers continues through Monday. I’ll take it one run at a time, and hope to get in as much Sherwood and Scott as I can over the next four days. If you’re of fan of any sort of skiing over at Palisades, this is the last weekend they are open at all. Go get it.

Rumor has had it that we should be hearing the plan for paid parking “any day now”, since Monday. If I were the one making that announcement, I would be afraid also. I’m guessing that right now it’s in the “Gaslighting Department”, where things get written to make it sound like it’s the only option and that it’s good for all of us, plus it will save the whales. I’ll be ready to tee off when details are announced. See you out there tomorrow.

  1. “One dollar of your parking fee will be donated to the “Save The Whales Of Tahoe Fund”, administered by Alterra Mtn Co”

  2. Here’s a thought for the Gaslight Department. Given the +/- 15% increase in locker prices (2.5x the rate of inflation), how about locker holders get a break on parking? We gonna be there all the time and are already paying up.

  3. The parking lots at Alpine and the Valley Formerly Known as Squaw both need a lot of maintenance in the $4-6 per square foot cost range. Still are we going to turn into Northstar, or worse yet, Vail? Will rich people be able to buy prime parking; oh wait, I think they already do. I can easily afford that but I still refuse to pay it on principle and because I’m kind of there for exercise, anyway.

    1. I doubt that any money will be used for maintenance… some will be used to the company hired to facilitate the reserved parking.
