In the Beginning

Hello Skiers,
In the beginning, the upper mountain was shrouded in darkness. Low clouds hung over the upper mountain making visibility poor to impossible. We stayed on the lower mountain riding Roundhouse for a few runs.

The first couple of runs were on the overnight groomed trails. They was butter soft and friendly, even with the grayness overhead. Wandering off the corduroy I found just enough new snow to have fun making fresh tracks. The amount of new snow in some areas was just enough, and on other terrain I felt firm tracks and occasional ice under foot.

The clouds cleared mid-morning, at least enough to allow me to enjoy North Peril in the trees, and then mid-Yellow, where I found good winter skier packed snow. Lakeview held just enough new snow to make skiing adjacent to the groomed runs enjoyable. As usual I could not ski Lakeview without making a couple of runs through Scott Meadow (low angle with just enough new to make it feel like skiing powder). We skied a couple of runs at Sherwood where I hit some firm rubble between soft powder as I skied Sherwood Face.

Some of the best runs I had were Counter Weight Gully and Our Father. Our Father is not a thin gully, but a nice wide slope. These trails offered some powder and on later runs just nice skier pack.

After a number of days being closed, Gentian Gully and Promised Land opened. Another of my favorites. I hit Gentian just after it was open so I had a nice untracked ski down to Subway before too many people scratched it up. Later we went back for three more gully runs. Art’s Knob, Seldom Slides, Fall Line, Ladies Slalom and a host of other trails were in very good condition today which is why I was out skiing from 9 until 2.

When you are out on the hill take a moment to look at some of the trail signs that are barely visible now or only 3 to 4 feet above the snow pack. Sympathy, Seldom Slides, and others that are normally well up on a tree show us how deep the pack is at this point in the season..

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. Yes, today was a lot of fun. Not epic by any standards, but good enough to get out and stretch you legs off piste and still have teeth left for a smile afterwards. We were delighted to find Gentian Gully open this afternoon, as I have been keeping an eye on that one. Sounds like you had a great day once you lost us!
