Two Noodle Heads

Hello skiers,

High winds and lots of new snow fell overnight and continued most of today.  The new snow is light and piled up at least 14 inches (per the Palisades App).  It looked and felt like more to me as I was shoveling and snow blowing my driveway this morning. This workout was repeated again this afternoon. Visibility was poor, avalanche danger high, and winds still whipping when the ski hill was scheduled to open.

Two Noodle Heads Riding Meadow Chair

There were some people waiting to head out to Roundhouse or TLC at Alpine, but both lifts were delayed for more than one reason.  They never opened, nor did any lift that went higher up the mountain than Meadow.  Today was a day to either stay home or go out and play on the beginner slopes.

Red Dog, Resort Chair, Far East, Exhibition, and KT open at different times during the day.  There was obviously more and better terrain on the Olympic Valley side on this day.

The small number of people that drove to Alpine Meadows, and decided to head out into the wind and snow, were treated to as many lift rides as they desired on the lifts operating. There were no lines at any of them.  Smile, you are on Meadow, Subway, or Big Carpet. Mark insisted we ski a new trail that has been groomed in recent days.  It is a short slope, 2/3 of the way down Meadow that leads into a creek that he claims was groomed.  We have named this trail Lower East Creek. It is about four turns long.

Even though the slopes were minor, we did enjoy making turns in soft new snow for a good portion of the morning.  A snack from Treats at lunch, and then a few more runs on Meadow, and we gave up the wait for TLC to open and headed home.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring better conditions and allow more of the mountain to open.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. Lower East Creek indeed. There’s also a culvert there to convey water under the base area and 10 minute parking which got plowed over. Hopefully we stay on the cold side of any coming storms.
