Pretzel Party

The view of Lake Tahoe was again stunning this morning. I could not see a ripple on its mirror- like surface. A warm sun was shining from a clear blue sky on this special day for two good friends. Bob and Kim, or is it Kim and Bob, celebrated their 32nd anniversary with a group of friends at the Chalet. Two large pretzels, garnered from the Chalet, were consumed by the group of friends as we sat soaking in the sun. It is a lovely spot to watch skiers turn down Yellow Trail and Ladies Slalom. A fun time was had by all. Congratulations to Bob and Kim, or is it Kim and Bob.

Grooming was excellent this morning. We raced from one groomed trail to another attempting to ski them all before the corduroy disappeared.

I goaded a friend into skiing off the groomed area of Wolverine. The area under Idiot’s Delight was still not skied out. A soft uneven surface included wind sculpted terrain. Although I enjoyed it, but would not have suggested to any other skier, my friend suggested I buy him lunch in exchange for the invitation to join me. D7 was pleasant, Quinn’s Chute under the Summit Chair to the skier right of The Face was very good, and Pygmy Forest, skier right of the top of the Alpine Bowl Chair was excellent. All these trails had a chalky winter surface. Sherwood Cliffs, under the top of TLC remains in soft winter condition as does the lower area of Our Father and the Palisades. Later in the afternoon earlier groomed runs at Sherwood Chair softened into a consistency that was just made for easy relaxed turns.

Yellow and Ladies Slalom nicely groomed

We traveled over to the other valley late in the morning and into the early afternoon. I found the groomed KT22 Saddle Run to be less than perfect as it had been skied plenty. By the time we slid down it was shaved off and a little slick. Hogsback, a mogul run off Headwall, was in good condition and made for some reasonably steep skiing leading us to Siberia. Siberia Bowl, off the groomed area, was also in very nice winter condition. We rode Broken Arrow and skied, I believe, Land Bridge which also had a good winter surface. After a slow ride up Silverado Chair looking at some awesome skiing, we scooted over to Emigrant. Leaving the top of Emigrant we skied to the valley floor and picked up a ride on the new Red Dog Lift. We skied the morning Red Dog groomed run. I found it slick and scraped off which is not my favorite. Then it was back to Alpine on the B2B. Why did it stop more than once on the way back? I have no idea, but we wondered why it would ever have to stop.

It was another great day on the slopes.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. I would mention that it got pretty sticky today, in particular in the sunny locations. Temperatures got to 50° at the base and mid mountain. The snow on the Sherwood side, at Scott and other south facing pitches was less like clumping kitty litter today and a bit closer to corn snow. Unfortunately the water content of the snow was pretty high, hence that stick feeling. It’s possible that some of those places will be more corn like for tomorrow before that little nuisance storm moves in Saturday and starts the process over again. The forecasters are still saying 2 inches up to possibly 4 inches are possible.

  2. Everyone should know that Palisades has already started the process of turning Red Dog into an ice sheet in anticipation of the World Cup races. Beware.

    1. Exactly this. Red Dog and Exhibition will both be sketchy for a while since they are injecting water into the snow surface to make it as hard as possible for the pros that prefer making turns on a tilted ice rink so it’s as fast as possible.
