Showery Day

Hello Skiers,
Today was a day of mixed weather. Windy enough to close most of the lifts with upper stations at higher elevations. Summit, Scott, and Lakeview were on wind hold as was the B2B Gondola.

Snow fell at times so I guess we call it snow showers. This afternoon the sun is shining along the Truckee River. Some roads are wet and others dry. The temperature is just under, or above, freezing at this point in time. The amount of snow that has fallen today is minimal.

The weather service has put out a winter storm warning for the Tahoe Area from late afternoon Saturday until Sunday evening. One to two feet of snow is predicted with high winds above 7,000 feet. Travel may be difficult with this amount of snow falling and lifts will likely be on wind hold part, if not all, of the weekend.

Groomed areas were in nice condition today, especially on the north facing slopes. I skied a run at Sherwood when the light was flat, but the smooth firm surface made it tolerable.

Low clouds creating flat light hiding the lake

I really did not ski off- piste today, but the areas that were chalky yesterday were the same today. Most of these were areas off Roundhouse today and they included Fall Line, Red Ridge, Roll and Knolls, and an area between Yellow and Chicken Leg. I assume that Gentian with its large moguls, Our Father, High Yellow, and Counter Weight Gully remain winter-like.

A Placer County road crew was out fill pot holes along Alpine Meadows Road.  I am not sure the repairs will remain in place, but at least they are making an attempt. Sorry the photo is so blurry.  I was driving by and could not stop when I shot the picture.

Another old time photo is shown below.  I do not know who the people in the photos are, but the lift was an original  chair in Sun Valley that I rode as a kid.

Enjoy your day

Andy

  1. I skied a dozen more runs after you left today, all off piste around Yellow in 1-2 inches of new snow, all on REDACTED. I did not see one person on that run all afternoon. The storm was right on forecast with a lot of wind causing upper mountain closures and a couple of inches of snow. The skiing turned out far better than expected. The parking lot had a typical Friday crowd with Lot 3 loosely full and Lot 4 loosely half full.

  2. Love the old time photo. As I recall and as one can see in the photo, older lift towers had ovular rings near the top to deflect chairs from hitting the towers during windy weather. I recall a chair I was riding clanging off those rings on occasion. Any idea what newer lifts don’t have those rings?
