Hello Skiers,
It is snowing steadily this afternoon along the Truckee River, as well as higher up on the mountain.
A reasonable crowd showed up this morning knowing that winds were blowing. The main parking area filled and spilled down the Alpine Meadows Road. It was not an overflowing crowd, but enough skiers and boarders to make the limited trails uncomfortable.
Treeline Cirque and the very beginner lifts opened at nine. These were followed with the opening of Sherwood Chair. Winds were howling at Sherwood as well as blowing into one’s face riding TLC. We rode to the top of TLC.
Not much room for the number of skiers and boarders at Sherwood this morning
I departed, or lost, my group and skied to the bottom of the groomed Sherwood Run. The surface was firm with the exception of one groomed lane that was softer than the rest. I made quick short turns within this groomed path. It was not fantastic, but good enough to pique my interest enough to try it a second time. The off-piste looked, and was, terrible first thing this the morning.
I did not stick around long enough to see if it might have changed from a frozen rutted slope to something softer that I could have skied. No matter, Sherwood was shut down with the rest of the lifts (with the exception of Kangaroo where a snowboard race was scheduled, TLC, Meadow, Subway, and the Carpet).
This condition remained in effect until the end of the day. When I returned from Sherwood I thought I would give TLC a try, but I noted the somewhat long line at the base so I headed back to the locker room. This was one of my shortest days of skiing for the season.
The rest of my crew took a couple more runs on TLC and Meadow, then followed me to the locker room.
I am spoiled. Skiing on the main groomed TLC run with a lot of other people for an extended period of time just did not hold enough interest for me this Friday the 13 of 2023.
Snow and more snow is on the way for the weekend.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
Editors Note: High winds are likely to affect lift operations until Monday.
Thank you for daily reports…in Bay Area so reports very useful..
Your not spoiled just smart enough to know there are better times to ski.
