I was somewhat apprehensive heading to the slopes today as it was 12:30 when my skis left the ground on Roundhouse. Sun had been shining on the mountain most of the morning, but clouds were around attempting to put the slopes into a shadow. Early this morning a cloud hung over the summit creating poor visibility, but I do not think that lasted long. Sunshine and warm temperatures gave me the impression that the snow surface would be wet, deep, and mushy in the afternoon.
I was wrong. Other than a few areas where it was mushy and sticky, conditions were wonderful. An inch or two of deep spring corn met my skis putting a smile on my face. Lower Beaver Bowl and over the lip to the top of Kangaroo was delicious. A smooth surface with spring snow that was just deep enough but not sticky. We skied around the mountain and included John’s Run (at least I think that is the name of the area to the skiers right of Pete’s Peril), Rolls and Knolls, Gunner’s Knob, Fall Line, Ladies Slalom, and lower Beaver Bowl finding them to be just right. Nick’s Run was desert. Pygmy Forest, lower Palisades, and the lower portion of High Yellow Face presented moguls, but they were joyous for making slow spring turns.
It must have frozen overnight as D7 was a little crunchy, but the rest of the mountain was pure delight this afternoon. Upper Beaver, Estelle, and Keyhole slopes were open, but High Traverse is closed. Sherwood, Lakeview, and Scott are done for the season.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
