Happy Saint Patrick’s Day
This morning the sky was gray creating a flat light condition on the slopes. I missed yesterday, which apparently was an excellent day. It was warm yesterday, which created smooth corn on some slopes according to those that slid around the mountain. This warm spring snow condition often turns into a very firm surface the next day, especially if temperatures drop below freezing overnight which is what occurred last night.
Groomed slopes off Summit and Roundhouse were just fine, but off-piste conditions were very firm until noon when I headed in for the day. This afternoon the sky has cleared and is a brilliant blue with just a few puffy clouds floating above Tahoe. Winds at the Summit are in the 45 to 56 mile per hour range, and temperatures are in the 40’s at the base and just below 40 at the Summit. I am sure the surface softened this afternoon and presented skiers with a nice corn surface. I stayed on Summit this morning. The best turns I discovered were in D8 and Alpine Bowl. Terry’s Return was also in good condition. On the other hand Kangaroo Ridge was firmly groomed providing skiers with a jolting ride.
Coming tomorrow are warmer temperatures which should softened the firm south facing slopes sooner than they must have softened today. Then on Saturday temperatures drop, winds pick up, and some snow should be falling into Saturday night. Sunday temperatures are going to be colder and below normal after which it is going to warm up again next week.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
