Going for Medals

My office door is open this afternoon letting warm winter air filter in to a space that is often somewhat stuffy during the winter months. It was another incredibly beautiful day in Tahoe. The sky overhead was again a cloudless deep blue. The morning began with Summit Chair on wind hold once again, but Alpine Bowl was turning allowing access to the upper mountain, albeit slow. Winds diminished just after 11 allowing Summit to carry skiers to top once again.

Alpine Bowl filled with first tracks

There is always a morning rush to make first tracks in the fresh corduroy. I think this is amplified by the lack of powder mornings we have had this year. Looking back at our tracks that should be in deep powder is somewhat gratifying. Although we are in a rush to make the first tracks in any corduroy we can find, I often like to stop after existing Summit Chair to take in the view. A moment of Zen to gaze out and appreciate our surroundings. I hope I never take our environment for granted.

We took full advantage of the groomed runs all morning. It was cool this morning which kept south facing slopes firm until 11 or 12. I roamed out to the north side of Wolverine Bowl around 11 this morning in search of something off-piste. The slope was firm as could be with pockets of wind drifted snow from the dusting we had earlier in the week. Lower down the snow had softened on God’s Knob. We did make a few runs on Scott Chair between 11 and 12 where we found smooth spring snow on Ridge and Bobby’s Runs.

The area I enjoyed most this morning, and yesterday as well, was the short drainage that runs been Kangaroo Ridge and the Kangaroo Chair (Editor: The area commonly called “Kangaroo Gully”). The snow was excellent. It is just a simple drainage with twists and turns that was fun to ski.

Local high schools were engaged in a competition on Kangaroo today. Speaking of races both Brita Sigourney and David Wise moved on to the finals in their Olympic competitions yesterday. Both Brita and David looked good in their two qualifying runs. Both are freestyle skiers who compete in the halfpipe event. Brita is scheduled to compete in her final event tonight at 5:30 and David is going for it tomorrow. Be sure to cheer them on.

Enjoy your day,

Andy
