Keep Your Politics to Yourself

The groomers were awesome early on today. Mark captured this shot looking back on Terry’s Return.

Gorgeous is a word that one might use to describe the ski mountain today. I have heard many references to the movie Ground Hog Day lately. Although each day is different, in a general sense, they have been relatively the same for a long period of time. Consistent surface conditions on many of the well groomed corduroy trails this morning, most lifts turning (the exception being ABC which was not running today), and late morning softening on the Sherwood side of the mountain.

Off piste is relegated to south facing slopes in the late morning or early afternoon when spring conditions rise to the occasion. The groomed areas of Sherwood were quite good earlier than expected today as was the off-piste.

Tomorrow east winds are in the forecast, as well as morning overcast skies. This will delay the spring conditions at Sherwood. The weather should be better Sunday which should create some excellent spring skiing on south facing slopes.

By the way the upper Alpine Meadows parking lots were nearly full today. Keep this in mind for your morning timing to get a parking spot without the need for riding a shuttle from one of the lower lots.

A number of high schools students were on the hill today participating in races on Kangaroo and Yellow Trail.

The Political Thing…

My friend and I were just about to load Summit Chair with three other skiers whom we did not know when a rather gruff skier pushed his way from behind and became the sixth person to load the chair. We could immediately feel the attitude surrounding us completely change.

We have an unspoken rule among my group of friends to put our masks on when we are riding the chair with more than four people, especially people we do not know who might be unmasked. The guy next to me, who was not wearing a mask starts talking out loud asking if I was afraid of the wind. He was obviously trying to make fun of us for wearing a mask on the chair ~~ assuming we were too stupid to realize that you cannot get Covid when wind blows into your face while riding the chair.

This taunting did not stop.

Next, on more than one occasion, he turns to me bending over and repeats the same statement. He continues by taunting my friend as if she were as dumb as me for wearing a mask. He continued on spewing his conservative beliefs stating Liberal Democrats are ruining the country and a number of other things that are not really appropriate chair lift discussions among people you do not know (at least that is my opinion).

He ended his rant by asking what we were going to do when the Russians invade our country with a last note that we, and our current President, (I assume thinking he knew our political leanings) had no backbone. We kept our mouths shut the entire way up Summit Chair. It upset us both enough to decide to leave the hill for the day.

I know this was a rare occurrence and that the majority of skiers on the mountain are more respectful of our freedom to decide what we choose to believe in and are respectful enough to keep their own opinions to themselves. Thus, please keep your political opinions to yourself when you are out on our beautiful mountain enjoying fresh air and taking advantage of our exceptional ski slopes. Let’s keep our ski area a happy place.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. Total bummer, Andy. I believe that those of us who are blessed to ride/ski should extend the love of this sport to others. But, there are those….
BTW, was the safety bar down : /

  2. That’s a real bummer that happened to you. Honestly for this season, as soon as Summit gets busy enough to where people want to squish onto my chair, I am out of there. I have mixed feelings about the singles lines. While I get the idea of getting people up the mountain, it seems like some people get the idea that the singles line is supposed to be some sort of express lane that gets you onto the mountain faster. Therefore, they think it’s their right to jump onto any chair that has less than the maximum. Sadly, the guy that accosted you today likely has no friends to ride with. We both have plenty of people to ride with.

Piling on here…with no snow for so long, the ramp at the top of Summit is a hot mess of ice right now. Having broke my arm there two years ago on an icy day, I’m super leery about loading 6 onto the Summit chair.

  3. Andy- don’t you know that Trump won the election, the virus is a hoax, and Hillary Clinton runs a pedophile sex ring out of that pizza parlor in Florida? Pay attention, will ya?

Editor’s Note: I am 99.9998% sure that Dr. X is being facetious here

  4. Andy, your rule about putting your masks on when more than four people are on the chair is a good one. This event happened two weeks ago as we were going through the turnstyles at Roundhouse: there was a threesome in front of us, as well as a single gentleman over on the right. He leaned into the three of them (a father and two teenage sons) and asked if he could join them. The father spoke right up, “oh, sorry…we’re all sick with Covid.” The guy immediately backed off, and successfully jumped into the group in front of them. We stood, shocked, as two of the four of us had heard this exchange. So deciding to put on a mask in a crowded situation, even when it’s outside, is a good idea, as there seem to be careless people everywhere.
    Imagine that?!!!

    1. Or maybe they didn’t have Covid but saying they all did was a really effective way of ensuring they wouldn’t have to share the chair! Just sayin’ 🙂

  5. What a drag! Sorry this guy was even there. Politics, weight, age and a few other topics are best discussed with true friends! Skiing as great today, especially before it got crowded

Thanks for all you do Andy!🤗⛷😘

  6. The whole episode starts with Line Control, or rather the lack of Line Control. What is so complicated about putting just one yellowjacket Right There and asking if those loading would be willing to take 1 or sometimes 2 more people (singles)? C’mon Palisades/Alpine, just do it!

  7. I really feel for you, Andy. What an aweful thing that you experienced. No wonder you left for the day. It would have made me sick too. Thankfully that doesn’t happen very often.

  8. What a spoiler on such a beautiful ‘spring skiing’ day…. In February. So offensive. I keep hoping you will slide onto our chair sometime as I would really like to meet ‘Andy’ who pens such entertaining ski reports, mountain mantras & weather predictions. I read Unofficial Alpine faithfully & so appreciate Andy & Mark! Shame on that interloper!

  9. Wow!
What an idiot on so many levels. Maybe he was drunk or on meth too. Or maybe just an IDIOT.
Sorry this person screwed up your ski day.
    You deserve so much better.
I haven’t had any issues yet but will be ready just in case.

  10. These buffoons succeed by triggering us. My goal moving forward is to just let it go as a mental illness when someone wants to discuss Vaccine hoax antiMasking etc. etc.

  11. Makes me wonder if it is the Masshole/Deadhead from Rose who abruptly enter lifts and spouts the same BS (Trump, antivax antimask etc etc). He was friends with a bunch of us until the 2020 election and took politics out on the hill and all of us were like we are here to ski and have a good time not talk about that shit!

  12. Good for you for not engaging this jerk…he obviously wanted to get into a confrontation.
This is the type of person who cannot have a good day even while out on the hill on a gorgeous day.
    Sucks to be him.
