The Red Bull Schlittentag turned out to be the highlight of the day at Alpine Meadows. Whenever you hear the voice of announcer Roy Tuscany over the sound system, you know something fun is about to happen. Roy was in fine form today, providing snarky commentary on the record 31 entries. The event drew a pretty significant crowd, given the dreary weather of late. It was a great to see Alpine looking a bit more busy today. It’s certain that the High Five’s TRAINS event will pull in an even a larger crowd on the 20th of April. It would be even nicer to see a pond skim event and the Mad Cow Downhill brought back to Alpine Meadows to keep people coming back to the mountain.
The skiing and riding today was the best it could be, given an incredibly bad streak of weather. While it’s not easy to groom soft wet snow, somehow the grooming staff managed to create the smoothest possible surface wherever there was enough snow to run a groomer. Again today, that grooming turned out to be important as the surface was quite firm to begin the day, while visibility was nothing short of almost nonexistent on the top 1/3 of the mountain. The Scott runs were crowded this morning as they offered an edge-able surface and good visibility. The snow did soften very rapidly today, providing a pleasant, but slow, surface for the remainder of the day.
The park staff has also been doing some refreshing of the parks, with some new features appearing and others refreshed or moved around. The park was busy today, as expected during the spring season.
