The Squawlification Of Locker Room 3 (And More)

Lockers
A tale of two lockers: #608 and #609, right next to each other. One will get a discount to renew, the other will pay 39% more this year.

As I told the friendly staff at Alpine Meadows today, I do love Alpine Meadows. There are so many good things the mountain has to offer, and most of the time, the management and employees of Alpine Meadows all work hard to make things work for all of us. But sometimes, decisions are made that just leave you shaking your head in disbelief. Honestly that has happened more frequently as real estate developers try to run ski resorts. Although this happened far more often with JMA at the helm, KSL has made it’s share of stupid decisions as well. I feel sorry for employees that have been around at Alpine Meadows for a long time whom are now forced to try to explain something decided by a bean counter somewhere in a cubicle in the KSL home office.

It’s clear that KSL has made a lot of people unhappy in Locker Room 3 this week. We have received a number of complaints via email and in person on the subject of locker pricing for next year. Here’s the brief synopsis:

Locker renewal emails were initially sent out saying that lockers could be renewed at the same prices as last year. Everyone was happy, as this was the first year without an increase in recorded history. Later an “oops” email was sent out with revised pricing. The good news is that for 15″ lockers the price was actually reduced from $439 to $429. The terrible news was that rates for 12″ lockers were increased from $309 to $429, a raise of about 39%. This really does not come as a shock to me as KSL had no qualms about raising the price of a kid’s lift ticket 140% or in nearly doubling the fees for children’s ski teams at Alpine Meadows. There certainly seems to be some inequity in the pricing scheme that has some people angry. A 12″ locker is much smaller, especially in an era where fat skis and snowboards have become the norm.

Sadly, I have already talked to 3 different long term residents of Locker Room 3 that will not be returning. The sad part is that we are selling out to Squaw Valley. There is almost no doubt that the new tenants will be Squaw Valley ex-pats who have found that Alpine Meadows is a great mountain, with cheaper lockers and better parking. So Andy Wirth’s promise of keeping Alpine and Squaw as separate mountains….don’t get me started.

Update: One reader has reported that the team locker room (located behind the lost and found kiosk to the right of Viva Treats) will be eliminated next season for not being “up to standards”. It would be the loss of yet another Alpine Meadows institution.

I’ll end this report with one of the passionate e-mails I received on the subject. It says the same thing a lot of people want to say:

“Wow….
I just love corporate America.
So….. yes… your friend is actually completely accurate. Last year the fee for my 12″ locker was $309.00 — and yes, the request this last week was that I gratefully pay $429 for that same locker this year (f*** them) — a 38.8% increase over last year’s price — AND that I should be thrilled, pleased, grateful and happy to watch my neighbor buddy open his own 15″ locker (right next to my own) for which he pays the same (or even slightly LESS THAN???? — WTF???) price than last year.

REALLY?

The good news is that I have spent the afternoon/evening dwelling on my own miserableness which has been (today) dictated by this evil corporation who TELLS people what they want and makes them believe what they want. Hmmmmmmm…………… and I (AT LEAST) have come out the other side of the thought process with a basic and solid (if not…… sobering) and very real understanding that my own attachment to skiing has absolutely NOTHING to do with the little metal box in Locker Room #3 (OH HEY:!!!! price tag $429.00!!!! THIS YEAR ONLY!~!!!!!! —- get it while it’s a real deal — and expect that KSL will stick it all straight up your a**!!!! ) and the sober realization that —- that very real understanding and knowledge that that particular metal box does not contain my heart nor my soul regarding my passion for skiing (all forms), and, therefore, I am pleased and actually quite happy to cough up my little metal box to another, more wealthy (or clueless?) individual…..
Along with my own, personal, resounding rendition of: “F*** YOU KSL!!!!!”
I care little or not about the corporate intention and financial gain of this evil corporation who now runs the show here (WAKE UP TAHOE!!!!!). Although,I do care — ENORMOUSLY — about the environmental cost, the expense to wildlife, the sky….. and everything else that we will lose —– FOREVER —- —- (THE INCONVENIENT TRUTH — catchy little title, don’t a think?????) before our very uninterested eyes. I, however, do expect to be treated, personally, with fairness and truthfulness. (An apparent dream – given today’s corporate truthfullness and communication.)
And OH – hey! — FOR THE RECORD — IN CASE THERE IS ACTUALLY A HUMAN BEING MONITORING INCOMING COMMENTS (that would, of course, require a pulse) —- and not that anyone actually really cares:
I’ve been an Alpine skier/passholder for two (2) plus decades and have been a locker leaseholder of a 12″ locker leasehold commitment (for myself) the last entire two decades: (why do I picture the corporate reader of this writing yawining and rolling his eyes!!!) ALSO: in addition to my own 12″ locker rental, I have/had sustained a previously-committed to another (yeah — I know you don’t give a sweep rip!) ten (10) full previous years of leasehold commitments concerning a separate 15″ locker (previously for my then-ski team child — which was relinquished by myself last year in a professional, fair and orderly and timely manner in order to [one-would-think-rightfully] enable the mounton to expediently offer to another — due to my own lack of future need — kids grow up!) and — ALL IN THAT STINKY, SWEATY, AND SMELLY LOCKER-ROOM #3!!!!
Oh —- and yeah —- so you know: through all of those years (recited above), I was a single LOCAL TAHOE WAGE full-time mother supporting my child, entirely by myself ,and supporting her ski team participation.
And soooooooo:
NO.
I don’t expect to be treated specially by your incoming CORPORATION.
I don’t expect to receive a big award for my own life of choosing.
I don’t expect (or want) to be an unwilling participant on the “Under Cover Boss”.
Nope …. Not at all.
I do, however, EXPECT be treated with fairness and truthfulness.
So there you have it…yes, KSL, you have made some people really angry…again.

  1. Yes, I understand her rant totally, she recognizes the incongruity of the situation and yet I can see that this was the straw… the one which hit the tipping point.. it is always the little things that aren’t so little… I feel her pain and wish I could tell her that someday it will get better… but with corporate culture at an all time high I believe it will not better until the volcano and it all starts over… hopefully we humans are smarter next time around..

  2. Mark,
As usual, you have your finger on the pulse – our blood was boiling as we tried to decipher the confusing communications that we received. Your investigative reporting saved me some time digging out the cost for this year and calculating the change. Totally makes sense to pay the same for a 12″ locker as it does for a 15″ locker – good work on the pricing model KSL.

  3. Just got off the phone with Squawpine. I was assured that my 12″ locker would indeed cost $429 and that a 15″ locker also would cost $429. The nice lady could not explain that pricing, nor could she guarantee that I could upgrade to a 15″ for $429. She transferred me to “Amy who does lockers”. Amy did not answer the phone. I will update you if I get a return call from Amy.

    1. I would not hold your breath waiting for a different answer from Amy. Decisions are being made in some other KSL cubicle.

      1. Maybe someone look at it and think 2×12″ should bethe same or more for 24″. I am not saying they should. I am also a locker victim, just not this one.

  4. My question is why is a locker costing as much as a PASS??? I used to have a locker that I had inherited from a friend that was not going to use it anymore. At that time there was a waiting list to even get a locker, that took a couple of years for your name to even come up. At the time I felt very lucky just to get one. Once the price for my 15″ locker was costing me damn near what my past was costing me it was time to get rid of the locker.
This year I have a friend that bought his passes and locker well after Christmas…. no problem. No waiting list plenty of lockers available. Wouldn’t any logical thinking person in charge of pricing lockers, LOWER the price of lockers in order for all of them to be occupied? I would love to get a locker, but with 6 kids it’s a finacial problem just to get lift tickets and passes. I just don’t get the thinking here. KSL is jumping over dollar bills, to pick up dimes. By the way… MOVE THE TERRAIN PARK!

  5. Here’s a quote from Andy Wirth:
“It is important to note that our team remains committed to supporting the unique brands and spirits of both resorts. We intend to offer an unmatched resort experience to the guests at Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley in every way – and a large part of this will, in fact, be maintaining the distinct character of both resorts.”

Typical marketing jargon. If anyone hasn’t read the excellent book “Downhill Slide”, a tome about what happens to ski areas, ski towns and the people within after corporations take them over, I will be happy to provide you with a copy. Just reply to this comment or see me in locker room #3, at least until the end of this season.

  6. One other note…. Is it true that the locker rooms at Squaw are going to be removed for the next phase of the V
Village? I thought I heard that said. If that’s the case, no wonder they don’t care about the existing clientele. They will fill the lockers with all of the Squaw Valley locker holders…. The pass holders that ski Squaw have lots of money.

    1. I had heard that rumor myself. When I asked Amy today, she said that the lockers at Squaw would be available as always, they just have not released their renewals yet. That said…virtually every new person coming to locker room 3 is a Squaw ex-pat. Some of them are even nice. 🙂 But it’s not cool when they are coming just because they are willing to pay more than people that have been there for years.

      1. I don’t think that’s what Squaw ex-pats are doing. Squaw must have known their guests are replacing the more expensive lockers with cheaper ones..

    2. Chevis Hosea, vp of development at SVUSA, met with locker holders in the “members” locker room at Squaw a couple months ago. He said the real estate under that building was the most valuable in the valley, that permits for development would be forthcoming this summer and not to count on the locker room being there next year, although some kind of temporary facilities, in a different location, would be provided.

      1. This is the way UnofficialAlpine.com is supposed to work…everyone sharing information. Thanks VCSKi for the update.

      2. Squaw is renewing lockers in the members’ building for next year with the caveat that, due to development plans, things may change in the future. They sent out notices Mar 25, but none of my locker neighbors over there received them.

  7. I have to laugh about this issue. I could see this one coming a mile away once they announced the absurd price increases in season pass’ in the past 30 days. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop and KSL to start charging for parking in front of the lodge every day of the week instead of just holidays. And we all know how well that worked last year. Enough empty asphalt out in front of the lodge to land a Blackhawk helicopter! I must admit, I do feel sorry for the few long time Alpine employees left forced to work with their KSL overlords.

  8. Ugh…here we go again. I don’t have a locker or plan to but this ticky-tack BS is getting old. Vail stopped Kirkwood’s over night RV parking…no Kirkwood pass this season for me. Dollars and cents are the only things these douches understand so I take my $$ elsewhere. This season I chose to load the back pack with the days supply of beer/food rather than give KSL another penny beyond my season pass. It sucks b/c that can affect jobs but I dislike KSL/Vail’s decision making more than my fondness of their employees.

Sugar Bowl you are looking really sexy these days…

  9. Just to echo the thoughts above. I’m another 5 year plus Alpine season pass and locker room #3 holder with a wife and 2 kids (both of whom were on Alpine Teams a year back) where this is the straw that breaks the camels back. Two years back we had 4 season passes, 2 kids on development teams and a locker. Next season i don’t know. I love Alpine Meadows, but the things that I love are gradually being eroded and I’m being priced out. Can’t wait for the Gondola from Alpine to Squaw base station and the blue runs with perfect grooming down the middle of Beaver, Estelle and Bernies. Then Andy Wirth will be getting close to his perfect little family resort that can take the overspill from Squaw.

  10. Chad, funny you should mention that. I’m thinking about getting a filtered pass and maybe a small locker at Sugar Bowl just to check things out and see how it feels. For those of us in Truckee it’s starting to look like a superior alternative.

  11. Just got my invoice for $429 for my 12 inch, ouch that hurts.

What really gets me is the $299 kids passes, that make $600 bucks just to get my kids on the hill, add in the locker and I am at 1K without even getting the 2 adult passes I need.

I want my kids to ski, but may try another resort, mainly for the kids (and the cost).

I live in Sac and always made the extra drive to get to Alpine since I am a 30 plus year skier there. I love the hill and the vibe.

Debating Sugar Bowl or Donner Ski Ranch, just to get on the snow without breaking the bank.

    Bummer.

  12. Correction, kids passes are 229 for silver. not 299 across the board.

When my kids can ski high traverse and high yellow, we will be back

I think Alpine has better terrain when compared to Squaw, just saying

    I love you Alpine

  13. As a locker holder one the race team locker room, we have been told the whole locker room is going away as it is not up to “standards”. Well no one asked me. It has been a great locker room-all the racers gathering together and families talking about the next race. Thanks Andy Worth and KSL for taking away our locker room.

    1. My son had a locker down there for 5 years. Yes, it is a pit, but no more than the room on the right in Locker Room 3. The team room does have a nice connection with the coaches lockers. Bummer for those programs. 🙁
