Bit by bit, the seasons are hinting at a change. We saw the first few drops of rain of the season, not associated with monsoon thunderstorms, on Friday. It’s also the autumnal equinox today, which traditionally marks the start of fall.
That doesn’t mean that we’re done with hot weather. In the long range, there’s still talk of another hot spell and offshore winds as we head into October. That’s likely to bring us extreme fire danger and another round of forest closures if the forecast pans out. With a weak La Niña still taking shape, the onset of rain and snowfall typically is later. Be patient, and be safe, so when winter does arrive we can have open ski areas.
Until then it’s time to start enjoying the ski movie season. One of Tahoe’s favorite companies is Matchstick Productions. Not only is Scott Gaffney, of Squaw Valley, a great director, he’s also an amazing champion of the local community. That alone makes me want to support Matchstick’s efforts.
This year’s film, Huck Yeah, premieres locally at the Tahoe City Art Haus Drive-in theater, beginning Wednesday, September 23rd. There’s two showings nightly, at 7:45 and 10:00pm through Saturday. Some shows are already sold out, so I would not wait too long. Sure, you can probably buy or rent the movie for cheaper but part of the preseason experience is sharing the movie with fellow snow lovers. Supporting the Art Haus is also a very worthy cause.
You say you’re out of town or otherwise unable to make the show this week? You’ll have to wait to see Huck Yeah later when it released online and on disc. Thanks to the amazing humans at Matchstick Productions, you can watch all of their older films for free online in the Matchstick Vault. #$%& yeah!
Yes, on Friday on my way to Truckee there were four drops of rain on my side of the windshield and five drops on Clancy’s (passenger) side… I forgot to mention this to you.
