10 Inches Of New Snow & Andy’s Report + A Guest Report Too!

  • by

Alpine Meadows is reporting 10 inches of new snow this morning and it’s looking pretty bluebird out there. Reports from yesterday is that the new snow was wet and heavy, which is what we need to rebuild the base.

There was no report from Andy and I was stuck at work. The commentary on the inter webs was that conditons were slidy yesterday with most new slow sliding off of steeper terrain. Groomers were reported as very wet and trenchy, with moguls developing quickly.

If you’re at Alpine today and want to submit your guest report, we would love to hear about it. Pictures would also be awesome! Email us with your report and have a bit of fame today.

Here’s the first guest report for today:

Ski Junkie says:

Today was good and variable, everywhere got a nice heavy layer 6 to 10 inches deep. First chair loaded at nine, Wolverine was uncut, ungroomed, perfect or thick or breakable frozen smooth in spots. It was a great day for “third or fourth tracks” on a lot of really promising looking fresh…North facing anywhere was good. Upper saddle looked sweet but, tracks were on top of the frozen surface for most of the morning. No high T today.

Tongue twister for today, Pockets of powder paradise precariously  placed between plates and piles of purgatory. :0)

Definitely better than working

Andy Wertheim checks in with his report:

Winter popped into the area yesterday with wind driven wet snow on the lower mountain and slightly less wet snow on the upper mountain.  It was wet yesterday with rain falling at the 6,500 foot elevation.  I spoke to a few people that skied yesterday and received varied reports from sticky and mushy to pretty good (mostly on the upper area above Roundhouse).  Last night the temperatures dropped, freezing the wet surface area and ruts from yesterday’s skiers, and sucking the moisture out of  higher slopes.  The grooming was excellent helping create a winter surface in Alpine Bowl, Wolverine, and Werner’s Schuss.  This morning it was beautiful.  Full sun from a clear blue sky.   Cool temperatures and a smooth palette to etch curves on much of the mountain.
The untracked snow, about 16 inches deep under the firm topping, was just a little tricky.  You had to know how to ski to leave nice tracks behind your downhill ride.  I broke through a wind driven top coating that wanted to split my skis into a wide V shape, but ended up powering through it all and enjoying the effort required to leave a pretty good curvy mark on the slope behind me.

There were places lower on the mountain that were firm on the groomed slopes and also firm off piste, but I assume it softened in the afternoon as temperature increased.  Overall, the skiing was much better than I would have guessed based on the icy layer found on my deck this morning.
