The R Word Returns To The Forecast

  • by

I’m not going to lie. I have been enjoying that summer-ish weather this week. I’ve put 85 miles in on my bike and got out to kayak twice, all the while doing my best to choose the road less travelled. But Mother Nature says it’s time to bring some rain back into our forecast.

It’s actually a very good thing. If we kept rolling through May with temperatures in the mid-70’s everyday, we would be in big trouble with fire danger pretty quickly. We need the rain this month, and some next month as well.

The rain should also stem the flow of recreation seekers coming into the Sierra for a little while longer. While some of us have been careful to avoid congestion, others seem to have adopted the idea that it’s now okay to return to normal. The scene at Boca Reservoir looked somewhat like recent photos of Southern California and Florida beaches. I wasn’t there, but saw it in several accounts on Instagram. Yes, we need more spaces opened. Yes, we need people to be smart about maintaining some distance.

The weather trend looks to continue toward rain and showers through the next 10 days, or more. Both the PNA index and AO index are both trending negative.

Next Tuesday is looking particularly wet, with models still showing the potential for 1-2 inches of rain in the northern Sierra, with more waves following Thursday and next weekend. We’ll take it!

Monday morning update: The models pulled back on rainfall amounts over the last few runs. We’re still expecting the colder temperatures and showery weather Tues through Thurs, but soaking rains are no longer a part of the picture, except for the extreme northern part of the state.

I have a couple of indoor projects to work on this week. We still have one more puzzle in our stockpile as well. Temperatures do rebound on some days to allow for getting outside for a quick hike or bike. Here’s where I was one year ago today…I sure miss that!
