There’s some good news for all us that are thinking about renewing our Ikon passes for another year. The renewal discount just got doubled, bringing the price of the full Ikon pass from $999 down to $799. The discount for base pass renewals also doubled, from $50 to $100, or $599 for the base level pass.
It also appears that the deadline for renewal discounts has been extended to May 27th. We can’t find that language on IkonPass.com, but it does say that in this post from SVAM on Facebook:
Edit: VCSki found it here on the Ikon site.
There’s also some discussion on the interwebz about whether or not any sort of refund is in the works for those people that felt like they did not get the full value out of their 19/20 pass. I’ve seen people that posted online say that they had purchased their pass counting on skiing and riding during spring break. Looking at the FAQ at IkonPass.com, no remedy is being offered for those people, other than a doubling of the discount for a full pass renewal.
Buying a ski pass is always a gamble. I’ve never had trouble making my Alpine Meadows pass worthwhile. By my quick calculations, my pass cost $8.65 a day this season, even though it was shortened by a couple of months. That said, I have also blown it with secondary passes. There’s been seasons where I ended up paying $147 a day to ski at a smaller resort like Boreal or Diamond Peak. That’s on me.
Another interesting side note is the slim possibility that Ikon resorts do not open for the 20/21 season. According to the FAQ, passes are non-refundable, even if the resorts do not open. If it happens that things are so bad that resorts don’t open next year, not going skiing will likely be the least of our problems. Still, you might want to kick in that $55 for pass insurance if you like that sort of thing.
Sadly, a huge part of America is finding themselves without employment or health insurance this month. Scraping up $199 to even make the down payment on a pass will be a challenge…hopefully we can all hunker down and do what it takes to get through this thing together, as quickly as possible.
Before buying ski pass insurance, be sure to read the fine print and be sure that it covers and does not exclude the risk you are seeking protection against. It would not be surprising to see exclusions for pandemics.
Spot on Nick. I’ve never been one to do extra insurance, extended warranties or those sorts of things that are designed to separate us from our money. But some people do like that gamble…
I absolutely agree, Nick. I had a shoulder injury at the beginning of March and am making a claim with the insurance, so I read the whole policy from this past season. It says that “quarantine” is covered, but I don’t think that equates to a “stay at home” order. I only think it would cover you if you were officially quarantined by a doctor or from travel.
May 27.

I like good news!
Man it would suck to have paid all that money just to ski on a Spring Break that never happened…you gotta get those turns in early and often.
Especially since we had spring skiing much of the season! 😎
I am encouraged by all of the vitriol against Ikon on their Facebook posts regarding the pass situation. If all of those people don’t buy an Ikon pass, like they say they won’t, there will be no lines next season.
The Epic Pass people sent out an email to pass-holders on 03/25 saying that they would be telling us, by the end of April, how they intend to show their appreciation for our loyalty. Still waiting to see what they come up with.
Now that they know what their largest competitor is doing, I don’t expect them to go any further than that.
