A Gray Day

  • by

Skiers and Boarders,

It is not often that I receive a text message from a friend who has arrived at the Alpine Meadows locker room early on the day after Christmas that reads, “Skiing today? It is a ghost town here”. My response indicated I was on my way. Perhaps it was not a ghost town, but close to it. The parking lot was basically empty. It looked like a non-holiday weekday.

It was cool, perhaps it felt colder that it was given the obvious humidity in the air. Low clouds shrouded the upper mountain where winds were apparently blowing enough to cause the closing of Summit Chair. The closing of Summit Chair created an opportunity for ABC to spin for the first time this season. Gray sky, flat light, and an occasional snowflake is my description of the weather on the mountain this morning.

The good news was the relatively good condition of the snow surface and the lack of lift lines. We toured the mountain enjoying turns on the groomed areas of Roundhouse and Bobby’s Run off Scott. Although Gentian Gully was filled with moguls of various sizes they were relatively soft and enjoyable, at least for me. Visibility was better in the trees. I spun around the mountain for a couple of hours before stopping to warm my fingers and toes that seem to get colder with age.

Enjoy your day,

Andy
