Hello Skiers,
Some people have to be knocked on the head every once in a while so they remember to get up onto the mountain before deciding to write off the day. This morning was such a day. It was raining at my house and the mountain looked like it was in a cloud. I headed for my morning cup of coffee at the Crest Café and decided to get some work done in the office.
The text arrived around 9:30 suggesting that I should get to the hill as the skiing was good, and it was snowing at the base. It was not long before I wandered out of the locker room and sat on a slightly wet chair that seemed very lonely as not many people were riding the lift.
Snow, not rain, was falling out of the sky, and it appeared as if 3 or 4 inches of new snow covered the ground. Of course the light was flat and the upper mountain was not visible, although Summit was running. A few turns off God’s Knob and I realized the snow was not bad. I was able to etch turns into the blank slope without much effort. Lower down, and later in the morning, it became more difficult to make turns as the pack was heavy and wet. We rode to Sherwood and enjoyed some powder turns in my favorite trees along with a surprisingly good tour on the Powerline Trail.
Snow conditions were certainly variable today, but better than I anticipated. Temperatures were dropping as I left the scene, but it is still pretty wet at lake level although it beginning to snow along the Truckee River. Streets are wet but clear at this hour.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
